Week 15 {29.7.21}
Hola!👋 Today we are back to talk to you about what we did this week! In todays lesson, we did prototype sketching
Figure 1. Original Sketch
To begin our portotype sketch, we decided to sketch our original coffee maker to see what could be added/changed to support the teams goal of creating a coffee maker that "Produces consistently good coffee"
Figure 2. Preliminary Sketch
After much deliberation the team realised a proper mesuring system needed to be in place to make consistently good coffee. As such the inner markings are marked according to the rule of 1 to 2 table spoons per 6 ounces of water. Each marking will represent one serving in that ratio.
The team decided that in order to reduce unnecessarily complicated materials needed (Curved pieces). We went with the idea of a french press merged with a boiler, resulting in the sketch above, where the heating element resides in the base of the coffee maker.
To remove the liquid from the base, a hole in the centre is made and a spring mechanism lever is used to close the opening. The spring, holding it in the closed position.
Figure 3. Secondary sketch
After hearing Dr Noels comments, We tried to think of what mechanisms would allow our product to work. We decided that the ratchet mechanism would be perfect for the coffee filter located at the bottom of the lid. The idea to have the coffee filter below the lid is to provide a convenient way to mix the coffee into the boiled liquid with minimal heat loss, after water begins to boil. The ratchet mechanism would hold it in place until the liquid reaches boiling point, at which the ratchet would open and drop the filter into the water for leaching to occur.
