In this lesson, we learned about chemical products. A chemical product refers to any product that utilizes chemical engineering principles in its manufacturing and/or function. Chemical products exist all around us and usually serve to enhance our quality of life or provide us convenience.

There are 4 broad categories of chemical products, namely

1. commodities

2. chemical devices

3. molecular products

4. Micro-structured products.

Commodities refer to products manufactured in large quantities from reaction engineering and sold at the lowest cost.

Chemical devices are products that aid in chemical transformations.

Molecular products are discovered through research and their use revolves around their specific chemical structure. And lastly,

Micro-structured products are products with very specific/specialized functions.

There are many different ways to further categorize chemical products. One example made known to us is through its area of usage.

In this particular module, the definition of chemical products we are focusing on is chemical devices.

After getting a brief idea of the module, we moved into our respective groups which are already pre-assigned randomly. We were told to move out of the class to conduct a brief team bonding session so as to familiarise ourselves with one another. During this time, we went to the food court and had a small chat๐Ÿ’ฌ over some food, finally ending the retreat with a wefie.๐Ÿ˜‹

According to Tuckman's theory of team development, a team will undergo 5 stages of development in order to grow and acquire team synergy. The 5 stages are Forming๐Ÿ‘ฅ, Storming๐Ÿ’ข, Norming๐Ÿ’ฌ, Performing๐ŸŽญ, and Adjourning๐Ÿค.

We understand that our group is currently still in the forming stages and we will have to put in that much more work to reach the performing stage by creating a team dynamic that everyone agrees on.

Here's a picture we took today during our discussions!

Describe how chemical engineering principles have been applied in the design and/ or manufacture of the identified chemical product.

Category: Household

Subcategory: Appliance

Chemical product: Air Fryer

Figure 2: Picture of Air Fryer

An Air Fryer is a chemical product, as it utilizes one of the many chemical engineering principles as can be seen in table 2 above. The chemical engineering principle that the Air Fryer functions on is heat transfer.๐Ÿ”ฅ

Heat is transferred via 3 modes, convection conduction, and radiation.

The air fryer is used to heat up/cook food items mainly through forced convection. The convection process heats up food evenly by surrounding the food item with hot air much like how deep-frying works to cook food quickly, except with a different medium of transferring heat.
